Value Added Services

Value Added Services are those activities performed by the 3PL that complement the core services of receiving, storing and shipping product. Value Added Services are the lifeblood of the current 3PL provider. These services include kitting, labeling, hanging (GOH), repackaging and light manufacturing. Your WMS must support these activities by scheduling, tracking WIP, capturing costs, printing labels and billing.

Value Adding allows the product owner to postpone costs until late in the supply chain process, or to provide customization services after the product has shipped from the factory. Value Adding improves profitability (by delaying costs and optimizing ex factory shipping volumes), reduces stockholding, improves customer service and reduces product obsolescence.

Most 3PL’s today provide the basic Value Adding Services, Repackaging and Kitting. Competitive advantage comes from being able to extend these basic services to include more complex activities. Increasingly customers are looking to their supply chain partners to handle tasks including, but not limited to:

• Invoicing
• Reverse logistics (including RMA issue)
• Quality Assurance checking and Certification
• Painting
• Complex Final Assembly
• Customer Service and Help Desk Support

Providing these services offers much higher margins, ties you to your customer and increases your ability to win new business.
